Do Driving Shoes Actually Make a Difference?
This question gets asked a lot around the forums and internet. So we have put together this guide to help you decide if your next purchase should be some sim racing shoes.
Do driving shoes actually make a difference? Yes they do, racing shoes are designed to be low profile, breathable and lightweight.
What are Driving Shoes?
Driving shoes are exactly what they sound like, shoes for driving, but these shoes aren’t just any run of the mill shoe.
Made from a durable type material, these shoes fit more like a sock or moccasin and allow the wearer to ‘feel’ more of the experience.
The sole typical goes up the further and extends up the back and also around the outer edge of the outer side of the foot
Driving shoes can come in a range of colors and usually are available as a low cut slipper-style or a more half boot style fitting.
Why do driving shoes make a difference?
The shoes are typically made of a breathable thin material, something like suede, cotton or leather. This allows the user’s feet to feel very comfortable, this then helps with driver fatigue, especially in endurance races.
The rubber sole extends around the shoe allowing for more grip and the thin nature of the fabric allows for more ‘feel’.
Where the foot is rested there is usually rubber sole, to stop wear and tear.
Which driving shoes do we recommend?
Racequip Race Shoe
RaceQuip offers an affordable all black race shoe for men ranging from sizes 8 – 13 with Safety reading of 3.3/5.
The Race shoe comes with classic American styling, suede leather upper and Pyrovatexflame retardant lining.
They have a molded sole with arch support and padded ankles. Weighing in at only 2.6 pounds these shoes are a good affordable choice.
PUMA Men’s Ferrari Drift Cat 5 Sneaker
PUMA has made a stylish race shoe that is aimed more toward fashion but is ideal for the sim racer.
With a slightly higher price point, you are paying more for the look in our opinion. But that said these race shoes offer a few surprising features.
Made from leather and textile the shoe is heavily breathable with breath holes laser cut through a lot of the fabric.
The oil-resistant rubber sole extends up the heel allowing support when resting the clutch foot.
They offer this particular sneaker in white or black.
Simpson Racing Adrenaline Approved Driving Shoe
Simpson racing equipment is a brand that is well trusted within the NASCAR racing community, with more than 60 years manufacturing racing equipment you can be sure that you are getting a quality item.
Their Racing Adrenaline shoe is made from satin suede and is lined with fire retardant material. The boot has a double speed fastening allowing you to take them off at ease.
They come in a variety of 3 colors, blue, red and black and have a non-slip sole with posi-grip traction. The racing boots are unisex starting from size 8 US.
There are more racing shoe manufacturers out there but these are the typical designs and price points you will be looking at. I would advise trying to race with socks on first to make sure you can get comfortable with the bare-foot racing feel.
It is no secret that racing with socks or racing shoes can definitely shave off those milli-seconds and help you to feel more as one with your sim racing.
Let us know what you think, do you like the idea of paying the extra buck for some sim intended racing boots or are you going to stick with racing in socks?
