7 Best Sim Racing Games in 2020

Tech changes within the sim racing world and so do the games, fortunately.

With more and more racing games becoming available we thought we would put together our top 7 car simulator racing games.

These racing games are in no particular order and are rated on multiple factors on why we think they are the best racing games in 2020.

Assetto Corsa.

We kick off with the big brother of all sim racing games, Assetto Corsa. Developed by Kunos Simulazioni this racing game has been around for over 7 years, first released in 2013 on PC. 505 Games partnered with Kunos Simulazioni to later release Assetto Corsa on Xbox and PlayStation 4 in 2016.

Is Assetto Corsa realistic?

Assetto Corsa is a realistic racing simulator that has a vast array of different real-world supercars to use. The graphics are beautiful and it offers varying degrees of difficulty. The user HUD is made up of visual ‘apps’ that can be toggled on and off. These ‘apps’ allow the driver to view real-time telemetry and data, such as tyre pressure, engine faults, track temp and more.

The feel of the car is said to be one of the best in sim racing and that is why Assetto Corsa is used quite extensively within online sim racing tournaments

Of course, you could make this game even more realistic by adding a simulator wheel and peddles.

How many racing tracks does Assetto Corsa have?

Assetto Corsa has 18 official racing tracks they are.

F1 2019

The second game to hit our best racing games is the behemoth that is F1 2019, made by Codemasters.

F1 2019 has definitely become a lot more popular during these recent COVID-19 times. This may have something to do with the likes of Lando Norris, Aquero, Max Verstappen and others taking to home racing simulators and broadcasting their tournaments on youtube and Twitch.

Codemasters said that this is their most ambitious Formula 1 racing game to date, updating the night racing visuals and now also including the F2 2018 season for you to compete in.

The visuals are stunning and sometimes people can be forgiven for thinking that they are actually watching the real thing.

How many tracks does F1 2019 have?

Codemasters have included all 21 circuits from the 2019 season. They include Suzuka, Bahrain International Circuit, Monaco, Monza and more.

Is it worth buying F1 2019?

You may be left wondering if its worth buying considering the new F1 2020 is due to be released in June 2020. The fact is, this game is massive and because its 2020 version is coming out you can pick this game up for a ridiculously low price. The fun to the dollar ratio is well worth it!

You can pick up F1 2019 on PC, Xbox One and Ps4.

Although iRacing is only available on Pc at the moment, it ranks high in the world of sim racing. iRacing is a subscription-based game meaning that you are getting one of the worlds best simulators. This game emulates real-life racing in a way no other can.

iRacing has a dedicated team that goes out to each individual track and laser scan every inch. They then take that data back to the studios and reproduce every bump, every angle and every crack.

What do I need for iRacing?

The sim has been rally well optimised and will run on most low-end systems. You will need some form of controlling device to enjoy iRacing, this can include, mouse, gamepad, joystick and wheel and pedals. We would suggest though, to get the very best experience out of iRacing, you should think about getting a wheel and pedal combo.

Project Cars 2

Self-billed the ‘Ultimate Driver Journey’ Project Cars 2 has the serious simulator feel combined with fun, open session racing.

Slightly Mad Studios have gone into a crazy amount of detail when it comes to real-world weather conditions, even the angle of the Sun can actually affect your grip and handling.

With 140 tracks in 60 locations, Project Cars 2 will keep you entertained for a very long time and with its ‘Ultimate Driver Journey’ career mode you can take the actual same path as real-world drivers have to take to become champions.

What system is Project Cars 2 available for?

Project Cars 2 is available for digital download on PC, and in hard copy for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Gran Turismo Sport

Polyphony Digital has continued to produce a masterpiece when it comes to the console simulator experience. Unfortunately, because it is only available on PS4 a lot of the gaming world is left without ever trying the game.

Gran Turismo was at the leading edge of car racing games in earlier years and this offering is no different.

What cars are included in Gran Turismo Sport?

With over 150 stock, commercial and concept cars available you are sure to find a car that you would love to drive in real life. The design of each car is done with impeccable quality right down to the turn signals.

Is Gran Turismo a serious car simulator?

Gran Turismo is dedicated to creating that sim feel but it does also have a more arcade feeling to it. It is often said that Gran Turismo has its own driving feel but you shouldn’t let that sway you from picking this fantastic game up.

Dirt Rally 2.0

Dirt Rally 2.0 is a realistic rally game developed by Codemasters and is available on PC, Xbox One and PS4. The series has been around for quite some time and was born from the Colin McRae rally series. This particular game was released in early 2019.

Dirt Rally is an immensely fun rally simulator and offers a fantastic rally sim experience, from extreme car crashes to tricky weather conditions, this game has it all.

As you can expect you are pared with a navigator who, like in real rally, talks you through the hazards ahead.

Is Dirt Rally hard?

The game is renowned for being quite hardcore and is quite intimidating to beginners. There are no tutorials and you have to learn the hard way. Luckily you can adjust driver assists like automatic gearbox and view change.

RFactor 2

Made by an indy company, Studio 397, RFactor was made intentionally for real-world racing teams to use for practice and control. The game has been available since 2013 but is an ever-evolving product.

With RFactor’s day/night cycles racing has never looked more pleasing whilst racing the Nurburgring.

Speaking of the Nurburgring, you can strap yourself in for the LeMans 24 hour race (that is actually 24hours).

Modding RFactor 2 and its community

The RFactor community is massive and is responsible for keeping the game relevant, you can apply community mods from the steam workshop, these include tracks, new livery’s, cars, quality of life mods and much more.

Do I need a racing wheel and pedals to play sim racing games?

It is not a necessity to go and buy a wheel and pedal combo but it will definitely give you the edge. If you are someone just looking to play these car racing simulators very casually then you could certainly get by with a gamepad.

If you are looking for that real sim feeling, the closest you will get to the actual real thing. Then we would definitely recommend getting a sim wheel and pedal kit.

If you do go out and buy a sim racing wheel and pedal combo dont forget to check out our guide on how to fit it.
