Sim Racing Accessories
Sim racing can be enjoyed with a simple set up consisting of just a wheel and some pedals. But, after a while, you might decide you need to add more sim racing kit to push for more immersion a better experience or try to get closer to that world record track time.
Luckily, in the sim racing world, there is plenty of extra racing equipment to add to your ever-evolving sim rig set up.
Since the dawn of sim racing, some 20+ years ago, people have been finding more and more ingenious ways of bringing the outside racing environment indoors to a virtual race track experience.
Sim Racing Pedals
Most sim racing bundles include a pedal set with the steering wheel. Some are exceptional, but, unfortunately, quite a lot of manufacturers seem to put little effort into the pedal rack and concentrate more on the wheel.
Thankfully, you can buy aftermarket pedal sets or officially licenced quality ones.
Here are a few that are definitely worth investing in.
Thrustmaster BUNDLE TH8A + T3PA PRO
The Thrustmaster bundle TH81 + T3PA Pro is excellent value for money and offers a huge upgrade to any Thrustmaster sim kit set-up. Made from 100% metal, offering a solid build and rigidity.
The Thrustmaster T3PA-PRO uses magnetic sensors instead of using potentiometers or switches, stopping any wear or tear and ultimately offering life long usability.
This bundle also offers the TH8A which is the upgraded Thrustmaster gearbox H-style shifter but can also be put into sequential shift mode.
The shifter also incorporates the same magnetic sensors found in the T3PA-PRO pedal set.
You can upgrade the shift knob by unscrewing it and replace it with real auto knobs bought from any auto store.

A button box allows you to map any of your in-game functions to be added to a button. For example, you could add a horn or headlight button. They are an excellent addition to any sim kit setup.

The RealGear D22 button box has 32 programmable buttons, switches and knobs. Made from metal and designed with real race cars in mind this button box is not only very functional but looks amazing too.

So, What is needed for sim racing? You can actually start Sim racing using a keyboard and mouse, but we would not advise this. Some ‘simmers’ start with a joypad and this is ok but you will not get that full ‘racing sim feel’.
The best thing to do is get at least a Sim Racing Wheel and Pedals to get started.
How much does a sim racing setup cost? Sim racing can be done on a low budget, you can pick up a cheaper sim steering wheel for something in the range of $100 – $150.
Can you make money sim racing? Official sim racing games do offer sim racing tournaments and race weekends and can offer cash prizes. If you get really good you could be offered sponsorship and go on to compete in e-sports.
There is no entry-level sim racing kit list, but we would say definitely try to at least invest in a steering wheel and pedal combo.
Extra sim racing kit can definitely help in ease of life situations and can also make you that bit faster but it is definitely a luxury more than a necessity.
